Hiring a wedding planner is one of the most important decisions a couple can make and it’s about so much more than just price. A great planner doesn’t just show up on the day of the wedding; they guide the entire process, keeping the event organized, intentional, and unforgettable.
From my experience at ALN Event Design, here’s what couples should focus on when choosing a wedding planner.
One of the biggest mistakes couples make is not asking how many weddings a planner takes per year. This matters because it determines how much time and attention your planner can dedicate to you. I intentionally limit the number of weddings I take each year so I can give each couple the time, creativity, and attention their wedding requires. Your wedding deserves 110% of my focus, creativity, and energy.
Not all planners work the same way. The last thing you want is to be led by price and end up with a disorganized planner who lacks a structured system, or doesn’t understand the proper order for booking vendors. A planner’s process is critical because it ensures every step of the wedding is intentional and stress-free. Without a clear structure, important details can be overlooked or mismanaged. In my approach, I guide couples through every stage with clarity and organization.
I start by reviewing the entire contract with them, so they never feel blindsided and know exactly what to expect. I don’t expect them to read a lengthy contract on their own. I walk through it with them step by step.
Next, we have a budget management meeting, where I take couples through what things actually cost and what their budget can realistically provide before we dive into design or vendor decisions. This ensures expectations are aligned, prevents overspending, and sets a solid foundation for every subsequent planning step.
We then go through venue selection, design discovery, vendor booking in the correct order, design and production planing and continue to have budget management meetings so that you always know where you are at and don’t end up overspending.
Its simple. You don’t cut the cake before you bake it.
A planner should know how to find and evaluate the right vendors for your wedding not simply hand you the same list they give everyone. Ask how they source vendors, compare proposals, evaluate quality, and determine whether someone is actually the right fit for your style, priorities, and budget.
Planning a wedding involves juggling dozens of moving parts. Ask how your planner keeps budgets, timelines, and communications on track. I manage budgets through multiple checkpoints, reconcile vendor contracts, and make sure deadlines are met without stress falling on the couple. A well-organized planner lets you enjoy the journey without worrying about missing details.
The right planner is not just a vendor, they are your creative partner. I make sure every client’s vision aligns with my approach before committing. My goal is to create weddings that are immersive, architectural, and memorable, where guests step into another world for a day. When we begin design, I take a few days off to just dream. I pull inspiration from interior design, couture fashion, art galleries, movies and luxury spaces. I look at the world around me and think about how I can take these outside elements and incorporate them into your story. Pinterest may inspire, but it never dictates the design. Every element is curated to reflect the couple’s unique love story, creating an intentional, immersive experience from start to finish.
I once saw a couple hire a planner based almost entirely on price. That planner had no clear system, booked vendors in the wrong order, and caused unnecessary stress and lost deposits. For instance, they booked a caterer before the guest count was finalized. When the guest list doubled, the caterer couldn’t accommodate the wedding, and the couple lost their deposit. I separate vendors into 1st and 2nd tier categories to make sure each one is booked at the correct timing. This could have been avoided with a structured planning process. My system prevents mistakes like this, ensuring every decision is intentional and strategic.
Hiring a wedding planner is about trust, expertise, and alignment. Ask the right questions, understand their process, and make sure their style matches your vision. A great planner transforms your wedding from a checklist of tasks into an unforgettable, immersive experience that your guests will remember for years. It’s important to choose someone who can manage every detail from start to finish, ensuring your vision comes to life seamlessly. A planner who offers full-service wedding planning and design handles everything from design conception and vendor coordination to day-of execution, creating a cohesive and stress-free experience for you and your guests.
At ALN Event Design, I take every wedding personally. I’m selective with the clients I work with, fully committed to bringing their vision to life, and obsessed with creating experiences that are different, intentional, and unforgettable.
